Science Academy School Holiday Workshop

Join us on campus for two fun-filled days of Science in the April School Holidays!

Pick one session or join us for all five school holiday activities showcasing real-world applications for Science and the fun things you will learn when studying at The University of Adelaide.

Chemistry workshop
When: 17 April 2019, 9.00am - 12.00pm
Where: Meet at Barr Smith Lawns 8.45am for registration and check-in

What you'll do: Spend time in our brand new chemistry lab, just like a first year chemistry student. This three-hour workshop includes a range of practicals involving techniques like Atomic Absorption, UV-VIS Spectroscopy, Chromatography, and Melting Points to discover how a chemist can help solve real-world problems.

Physics workshop
When: 17 April 2019, 1.00pm – 4.00pm
Where: Meet at Barr Smith Lawns 12.45pm for registration and check-in
Cost: $55

What you'll do: You will construct a device that sends sound in a light beam - aka your very own take-home Laser Radio. With assistance from scientists and engineers from the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS), participants will gain valuable hands-on experience in our Engineering labs, as well as learning about the theory of optics and gaining practical soldering skills. This activity will also include a tour of the IPAS facilities, including metal 3D printing and optical fibre drawing, along with a presentation on the important role light will play in the future of communications. Cost of activity includes take-home laser radio.

Biology workshop
When: 18 April 2019, 9.00am - 12.00pm
Where: Meet at Barr Smith Lawns 8.45am for registration and check-in

What you'll do: Microscopy in its many forms, is the single most powerful technique available to view cells and bacteria. People skilled in microscopy are sought after to work in both clinical and research laboratories. In this laboratory exercise, heat-fixed smears of yoghurt culture are stained to reveal the bacteria used to produce commercially available yoghurt. Since bacteria are typically not visible to the naked eye, a compound light microscope is used to view the cell morphology of the bacteria. When viewed using oil immersion at 1000x total magnification, the size and shape of the stained bacteria is easily seen.

Food and Nutrition Science workshop
When: 18 April 2019, 1.00pm – 2.30pm
Where: Meet at Barr Smith Lawns 12.45pm for registration and check-in

What you'll do: Discover how your taste buds can play tricks on you and the interesting ingredients hiding in your food. In this workshop you will taste test a range of different breakfast cereals to help you understand nutrition and what’s included in your favourite supermarket snacks. Look at packaging labels and be amazed at the range of ingredients in the foods you consume. Please note: this activity will include tasting a range of foods, please advise of any dietary requirements when booking.

Our Environment, the Earth and Agriculture
When: 18 April 2019, 2.45pm – 4.00pm
Where: Meet at Barr Smith Lawns 2.30pm for registration and check-in

What you’ll do: Ever wondered how drones can save the world? Drones have a range of real-world applications including monitoring populations of endangered species or helping gather data in agriculture and engineering. These high performing unmanned research aircrafts are discovering new ways to advance science and solve problems around the globe. In this workshop you will visit our Unmanned Research Aircraft Facility and discover the cutting-edge projects undertaken with state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment.

Please note: No supervision will take place outside of the advertised workshop times. No meals will be provided but food outlets are available on campus for students throughout the day shall they wish to remaining on campus and purchase food or drinks.
