Event description
A virtual networking event for teachers and school staff who are the 'wellbeing person' at work.

About this Event

Are you the teacher or staff member who is the "wellbeing person" at your school?

Are you always advocating for more support for the adults in the school as well as the students?

Does your Principal want to address staff resilience but don't really know where to start?

Perhaps no such thing exists yet in your workplace but you like the sound of it and you want to be the "wellbeing person".

Maybe there's even a wellbeing committee or staff wellness club in your school already and you have learned a lot about what works and what doesn't work.

If any of the above sounds like you, then you're in the right place.

Come along to this virtual meetup to connect with wellbeing champions from schools around Australia and New Zealand.

The aim is to get to know each other, share a bit about what has worked or hasn't worked in your workplace, and connect with others who may be able to support you in your journey being a school wellbeing champion.

We'll meet on Zoom, have a cuppa and enjoy a spot of virtual networking!

Saturday 13th March at 10am QLD | 11am NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS | 9.30am NT | 10.30am SA | 8am WA |1pm NZ

WHY:

I'm Ellen Ronalds Keene, the founder of Self-Care for Teachers and the host of the Teacher Wellbeing Podcast, and I'm seeing a trend: schools are finally (FINALLY!) waking up to the fact that the grown ups need support with wellbeing and resilience as much as the students do.

However, as teachers and school leaders are all overworked already, it still tends to fall to the bottom of the to-do list. Or worse still, staff wellbeing is treated like a 'tick box' activity and only tokenistic efforts are made.

And yet, in most schools, there's at least one member of staff who is passionate about the health, happiness and resilience of their colleagues and is regularly sharing tips and suggestions to help support everybody.

These people are School Wellbeing Champions, and they are true legends.

In your school there may be one or more than one, or maybe none (yet - that's where you come in!)

What often happens, though, is that because this isn't an official role it becomes yet another thing on an already-busy person's plate.

Even if there is an actual wellbeing committee, it's completely volunteer run and there isn't much time, energy or budget allocated towards it by the school.

It's an add-on at best.

So the Wellbeing Champions who are so passionate about keeping everybody else well come up against a number of challenges in their role:

  • increasing difficulty maintaining their own wellbeing due to extra responsibilities
  • increased amount of emotional labour due to colleagues sharing their struggles
  • increased stress due to low staff morale and an unhappy workplace culture, potentially including colleagues who are critical of any 'hashtagwellbeing' efforts
  • vague expectations from leadership about what the role entails leading to confusion and frustration on both sides
  • very high expectations from leadership about the deliverables of the role with very little support to achieve them
  • no support from leadership and an uphill battle to convince school leaders that staff wellbeing matters at all!

Sound familiar?

As yet, there isn't a PD that you can go to that will support your role as wellbeing champion, but one day hopefully there will be (I'm working on it!).

In the meantime, we are stronger together. We can support each other, share resources and ideas, and expand professional networks with likeminded colleagues.

Come to this School Wellbeing Champions Virtual Meetup and let's start to address this, one school at a time!

Please note: this is an event for teachers/school staff, not for businesses to do with school, teacher or workplace wellbeing. If you are in business in the teacher wellbeing space and would like a meetup, a group already exists. Email hello@selfcareforteachers.com.au for more info!
