Event description

Description

The School Holiday Bike Skills program is a 2-day bicycle confidence, skills and awareness training program commissioned by the City of Whitehorse. It is for children aged 9 to 12 years, who are residents of Whitehorse. This is a very popular program and we will only be accepting registrations from those who have not previously participated in the program.

The course teaches a range of skills including preparation for riding, riding safely, safety checks, emergency stopping, using gears, scanning, signaling, riding on different surfaces, road rules & signs, riding on paths and basic repairs and maintenance.

Day 1 of the course is run in a safe, traffic-free area by professional instructors from Bikes at Work. Day 2 includes a component of instructed on-road training on low traffic quiet roads, plus a basic bike maintenance and puncture repair session.

Participants will need to:

  • Have basic bike riding skill
  • Not have training wheels
  • Bring their bike in roadworthy condition and their helmet
  • Attend Day 1 in order to attend Day 2

FAQs

Who is this course aimed at and what will they learn?

This 2 day course is for children aged 9-12 who can already ride on 2 wheels (e.g. balance on a bike and have basic control skills). Participants will develop their bike control skills and increase riding confidence and road safety / traffic awareness. They will also learn basic bike maintenance and be shown how to confidently make a local trip on quiet streets around school.

How will they learn?

The sessions are taught by experienced AustCycle qualified instructors from Bikes at Work. All instructors all have Working with Children Checks and First Aid qualifications. Children will be taught through instruction, demonstration, practice, games and challenges. Day 1 comprises group training for all 15 participants. Day 2 comprises more of the same, plus a short on-road ride on local streets with two instructors per group of 5 children.

Does my child need to attend both days?

Yes. In order for children to join the on-road ride on Day 2, they will need to demonstrate suitable skill and behaviour on Day 1. In the unlikely event of this happening, parents will be informed at end of Day 1 and advised that their child will not be allowed to join training on Day 2. In this event, a 50% refund will be provided. We ask that all registrants commit to attending both days of training to allow your child to experience the key objective of riding safely on quiet streets.

What should my child bring?

  • Their bicycle in good condition with working brakes, a bell and pumped up tyres
  • Their helmet
  • Runners or similar closed-toe footwear
  • Sun/weather protection
  • A bottle of water
  • Lunch and snacks
  • Any medication
  • Suitable clothing

What is the start/finish time?

Both days are 9.30am-2pm.

Where should we come for the training?

You will be sent a reminder email with these details a few days before the session. Meet at the clubhouse in Mont Albert Reserve, cnrs Dunloe Ave and Braemar Street, Mont Albert. Map here: https://goo.gl/maps/GExA3kbcJ4x

What facilities are there at Mont Albert Reserve?

In addition to the basketball court for the training, there are toilets, water fountain, shade/shelter, indoor classroom & fenced oval for breaks/lunch.

At what stage is my child’s place confirmed?

Initially, you’ll need to make the payment via this Eventbrite page, and provide your first and last name, and email address. Bikes at Work will then contact you to request your child(ren)'s name, age and your address. You will also be required to complete of a Registration/consent form to include emergency contact details and any medical conditions/allergies. Please complete and return this promptly, as this will ensure your child’s place is confirmed.

What if the weather isn’t great?

The training will only be cancelled if the weather forecast predicts very wet, very windy or very hot weather. In this event, we will contact you 2 hours’ prior to the start time and your registration fee will be refunded. If weather conditions deteriorate after training has begun, training activities may be modified or omitted or the session terminated to minimise health and safety risks. No refunds or credits will be given. We will contact you and ask you to collect your child, if possible. Otherwise we will wait with them until 2pm.

Why is this course not free?

Council are heavily subsidising the training course for participants. We feel confident you will agree that it is excellent value for 9 hours of quality training. This successful program is now in its fourth year. Cost per child is $20, or $10 concession rate (please contact Georgie from Bikes@Work for the promotional code).
