Susannah Fullerton: Scene of the Crime
Setting is hugely important to a crime writer. It sets the mood, it reveals character, it influences the plot, it can have a symbolic importance, and it helps establish credibility by rooting awful and sometimes bizarre events in the soil of a recognised place. Some authors manage to evoke a setting so well that literary tourists arrive in great numbers to do guided walks around the places associated with fictional characters.

American Donna Leon visited Venice for the first time in 1968 and fell in love with the city. She then moved to Venice and her first Commissario Brunetti novel, Death at La Fenice, was published in 1992. Her 27th novel in the series is due out in 2018 – all are set in and around Venice. Guido Brunetti, his Henry James-reading wife Paola and their children, his colleagues Vianella, Patta and the Fabulous Signorina Elettra all come vividly alive against a background of St Marks, the Rialto Bridge, the islands of the Venetian lagoon and Café Florian. Explore the canals, islands and palazzos of Venice with Donna Leon’s Brunetti.
