Friday 16 Jan, "The Great Cane Toad Bust" at Minnippi Parklands
Overview
Join us for the Great Cane Toad Bust at Minnippi Parklands with Science Educator, Gary King.
This event has received funding from the Queensland Government. A particular shout-out to Steve Minnikin MP, Member for Chatsworth, Minister for Customer Services and Open Data, and Minister for Small and Family Business, for his ongoing support.
What is the Great Cane Toad Bust?
The Great Cane Toad Bust is Australia’s biggest cane toad control event, changing the game for Cane Toad control!
Every year, Cane Toads (Rhinella marina) wreak havoc on Australian native wildlife, poison thousands of pets and even impact local agriculture.
Cane Toads can live for more than 10 years, and females can produce up to 35,000 eggs each time she breeds. This means that every Cane Toad removed really does count!
This event is action packed, fun and can have a huge impact on Cane Toad numbers.
Minnippi Parklands
Minnippi parklands is traversed by Bulimba creek and contains a large man-made lake. These water sources provide habitat to a large range of frogs and reptiles.
Minnippi parklands is also an E-bird hot-spot with almost 200 bird species recorded in the area.
By helping control the invasive Cane Toad the community can help the wildlife at Minnippi Parklands thrive.
What to bring?
We have buckets, gloves, torches and toad grabbers; however you may also want to bring your own.
Join the fun and make a difference!
We will euthanise and dispose of the toads humanely and responsibly after the event.
Participants will also be given a presentation at the start covering important information such as identifying toads (not confusing them for native frogs), health and safety and basic toad biology.
If you can’t come to this particular event, you can collect cane toads on your own property.
When cane toad busting on your own, make sure you know how to identify the Cane Toad (Rhinella marina). Some native frog species may be confused with juvenille and adult toads. Australia has many brown and lumpy native frogs.
The Great Cane Toad Bust is co-ordinated by Watergum, in partnership with many community groups!
