Event description

Description

The long wait is over, we have secured a new batch of the multi award winning range of Swiss whisky from Säntis and invite you to come along to try this rare and unique range with us.

Located in a Swiss village of 6,000 people, Appenzell boasts stunning scenery out of The Sound of Music and is where Säntis Whisky has been produced by the Locher Brewery and Distillery since 1886. The brewery is now owned and managed by its fifth generation, producing nearly 30 types of Appenzeller Beer. They use pristine local spring water and highland barley to produce a whisky that one prominent whisky scribe (with a red nose and glowing eyes) named Best European Whisky.

We will try four core expressions of Säntis, each named after a different Alpstein rock formation: Himmelberg (beer and wine cask), Sigel (small batch beer cask), Dreifaltigkeit (or Trinity - beer, wine and peat at cask strength) and Marwees (single malt cream liqueur), and two limited releases: Snow White #4 (48% Pear Brandy Cask), and Alpstein (48% Pinot Noir Cask).

Tuesday November 28th, 6.30pm for a 7pm start held in our tasting room. Tickets are $45 per person and must be booked in advance. Fine banter, finger food and great pricing will be provided on the night. Questions to 62313400 or todd@destinationcellars.com.au

SÄNTIS SINGLE MALT WHISKY FROM APPENZELL, SWITZERLAND

The Säntis malts are aged predominantly in old beer casks, which may be anywhere between 60 to 130 years old. These anciet casks were sealed using a pitch or plant-resin, to ensure that both the beer and the casks remained young and fresh. Over decades of use, the pitch sometimes became cracked, allowing the beer to soak into the barrels, at times up to a depth of one centimetre. These century-old aromas and beer extracts are utilised to impart flavours in the same way that other whisky producers utilise old sherry, port or bourbon casks.

With an abundance of high quality spring water, the conditions for making whisky there are ideal. But the brewery turned to its other local ingredients to enhance its spirit. "Thanks to the altitude and extreme weather conditions, grain grown here is stronger and more vigorous," says the company.. This quality is ultimately reflected in the final product, noticeably increasing the exquisite flavour. In addition, this project has contributed to sustainably reviving mountain agriculture in Switzerland."
