Event Details

"Why don't they leave?"  is the number one question that is asked regarding domestic violence.  The reasons are many and just as individual as the people impacted by this heinous and secret crime.

One of the reasons that a victim of domestic violence may leave and return to their abusive partner is not only fear for their life; also for the fear for their pet.

What the research says

  • There are an estimated 1.3 million victims of intimate partner violence annually, with 85% of victims being women. There are 73 million companion animals in American Homes (62% of homes).
  • Did you know that up to 48% of domestic violence victims will delay or refuse leaving an abusive homeout of fear of leaving their pets or livestock behind?
  • Did you know that up to 85% of women entering domestic violence shelters reported that their partnerhad threatened, injured or killed their pet?

SAF-T removes barriers to safety and allows families with pets to seek safety together thus saving lives!

This half-day program provides a forum for victim advocates, law enforcement and other first responders to effectively work withs survivors of domestic violence with pets.

The event is co-hosted by Mercy House, an emerency shelter serving victims of domestic violence with pets and the Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council.
