Safe, Supported Human Rights: a practical course for reducing and eliminating restrictive practices
An award-winning experienced Behaviour Support Practitioner Sharon Paley is published widely on the topic of restraint reduction. She is the author of a published ethical decision-making framework that guides practitioners in applying context-led, person-centred approaches to reduce restrictive practices and a restraint reduction framework. Sharon specialises in supporting organisations and practitioners to make ethical, defensible decisions that prioritise safety, dignity, and positive outcomes for people with complex support needs
Participants will explore the human rights foundations that guide best practice, the drivers and barriers that lead to restrictive responses. We will discuss the evidence related to use of restrictive practices across sectors. Delegates will strengthen their confidence and understanding of relational practice, proactive environments and understand the drivers that can lead to a reduction in restrictive practice. Practical tools will be discussed and promoted as part of this course. The course will include:
- Human rights- foundational approaches
- Evidence about the use of restrictive practice & barriers to change.

- Practice for reducing restrictions and overcoming the barriers.
