Course overview

This training is essential for staff/volunteers to meet one of the four Commonwealth Home Services Programme (CHSP) training requirements. 

Are you just starting your home visits or have you been home visiting for a long time and want to review/refresh your practice? Either way, this session will assist you to make your home visits productive and safer.

Using realistic case scenarios and participant experiences we will explore and develop good practice policy, procedures and strategies which ensure care provider's physical and emotional safety when entering and working in service users' home.

Topics covered?

  • Identifying safety issues, determining when it is safe to visit, how to make it safer and what to do if the visit gets tricky
  • Legal and ethical responsibilities of staff and volunteers
  • WHS and Duty of Care
  • Good risk assessment practice and tactics to ensure physical safety during home visiting - hazardous substances, manual handling, environment, threat of violence and substance abuse
  • Practical safety tips and strategies to use for protecting emotional boundaries around client's history, behaviours, health status, domestic, social and support networks

   About the facilitator      


Betty Stampoulis-Lyttle has been working in the Community-Welfare sector for nearly 25 years, and contracted her services as an independent Training Consultant since 2011.

Her work has included the development and delivery of recreational, educational and therapeutic workshops for individuals with disability (and their carers), and training sessions for staff & volunteers, including teaching Welfare & Community Services at TAFE.

Betty is a member of the Institute for Learning Practitioners and founding member of National Disability Practitioners. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology), is accredited in Certificate IV Assessment & Workplace Training, and is currently undertaking a Masters in Social Work (Qualifying).

The Junction Neighbourhood Centre Inc. (JNC) provides a diverse range of services and support to disadvantaged groups across local government areas in Bondi Junction (Waverley), Randwick and Maroubra. Operating for 41 years, JNC has continuously strived to provide responsive and meaningful services to meet identified community needs and seek to develop community participation in the development of these services.

As a basic introduction, The Junction Neighbourhood Centre Inc. is a not for profit organisation resourced through government funding from Department of Social Services, NSW Family and Community Services, local government, community grants, donation, and some sponsorship.

We provide specialist services for familiesolder people, people with disabilities and their carers; facilitate the recruitment, training and referral of volunteers for Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) in the City of Sydney and Eastern Suburbs; work with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the Randwick LGA, run social inclusion groups & classes for people who are socially isolated; and organise practical assistance with outreach services including financial counselling, tax help etc.
