Session overview

This training is essential for staff and volunteers to meet one of the four Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) training requirements. 

The workshop provides staff and volunteers with the skills and knowledge of how to shop for, prepare and store food to reduce the incidence of food poisoning.


What’s covered

Government legislation on food safety and how it affects workers and volunteers in the food industry.
The importance of personal hygiene and thorough hand washing techniques.
Identifying various food poisoning bacteria and the methods to protect food. 
How to reduce and manage food spoilage. 
What is considered the "Danger Zone" of food temperature control?
How to safely store food items.
What does "Cross contamination" mean and the ways to prevent contamination of food. 
Practical cleaning and sanitation strategies. 


Who should participate?

Access to this training is only given to staff and volunteers currently working in Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) funded services located in the local government areas of; The City of Sydney, Woollhara, Waverley, Randwick and Bayside.


How do I get there? 

There are a number of different transport options for you to choose from depending upon your departure point.  

  • Trains: Bondi Junction Train station is located 5 minutes walk (300 metres) away from the Mill Hill Centre.  Trains on this line are T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra lines. 
  • Available bus routes: M40, 200, 313, 314, 316, 317, 326, 327, 328, 352, 353, 355, 357, 360, 380, 381, 386, 387, 388, 400, 400N. 
  • Driving: metered on street parking is available or use the car park in the Eastgate Shopping Centre, Ebley Street, Bondi Junction - located 1 block away from the training venue.

 About the facilitator

Jill Lipman is a trainer and teacher of over 25 years in TAFE specialising in Food Safety. Jill has worked with Community organisations, Meals on Wheels and worked within the Food Industry, training staff and volunteers in Food Safety.

VAST provides face to face courses, managers' breakfasts, volunteer training, customised training opportunities, including our highly sought after, "Tailored for Tomorrow" program. 

VAST is part of the Southern Sydney Connection partnership with 3Bridges and STARS and is a programme of The Junction Neighbourhood Centre.
