Event Details

The creative combination of a deeply traditional folk musician with a jazz, blues and roots singer gives Sadie and Jay an intimate and enchanting sound. They play beautiful songs with exceptional vocals, glorious harmonies, intricate finger style guitar, bouzouki, banjo and double bass. They are influenced by the storytelling nature of the Anglo-Celtic traditions and contemporary folk, blues and roots music which reflects in their collaborative songwriting.

They released their first all original album ‘Curious’ in early 2015 with original tracks shortlisted for the Australian Songwriters Awards and another two won first place in the 2015 & 2017 APRA/AMCOS Illawarra Folk Festival song writing competitions. Sadie and Jay have been per- forming as a duo for the past five years. In mid 2016 they had a successful first tour of the UK performing in clubs from Wales to Scotland, supporting acts such as Hervey Andrews, Barluath and Mean Mary James (Nashville.)

Sadie and Jay released their second original album “Rogue Folk” in September 2017. Within a month Rogue Folk was ABC Radio Brisbane’s Album of the Week. “Red Red Dirt” from the album reached no2 on the Australian AMRAP Regional Charts. The duo’s collaborative work hints of origins in the Anglo-Celtic tradition travelling through modern Australian folk, blues and roots. The album features a host of prominent guest musicians and is produced by acclaimed guitar virtuoso, Michael Fix. The songs are rich in musical depth and meaning, the distinctive vocals and crafted lyrics are focal to the tales of history and endeavour, love and light-hearted comedy.

Since their 2016 UK Tour, Sadie and Jay have become “antipodean correspondents” for the Folk and Blues Radio Show based in York, regularly interviewing South East Queensland musical peers such as Mark Cryle, Nicole Murray & John Thompson of Cloudstreet, The Company, Rebecca Wright & Donald McKay, Noel Gardener and many more. Sadie and Jay will be return- ing for their second UK Tour in April 2018, performing as featured guests at folk clubs, live music venues and two major UK festivals, Upton Folk Festival and The Great North Festival.

Alison Bell – Vice President of The Brisbane Folk History Project
“Sadie & Jay are attracting a growing audience and it is easy to understand why. These independent Austra- lian artists are highly accomplished at making music and the music they make just keeps getting better and better. The pair do not take themselves too seriously but they certainly take their work seriously – the combi- nation is intoxicating.”

Ann Leung – Recording Artist and ABC Radio Correspondent
“Losing myself in the masterful instrumentation and drop dead gorgeous vocals. Beautiful work and so aptly titled. Warm, enveloping, humorous. Traditional folk references with a contemporary twist. . This is a wonderful & important addition to our local contemporary folk recording history.”

Susan Jarvis for Country Music Capital News
“The sounds of Brisbane newcomers Sadie and Jay will blow your mind. Produced by Michael Fix, their latest album is spectacular: a collection of 11 superb original tracks and arrangements that are performed and played with consummate style and abundant talent. The musicianship is superb, and the vocals exquisite.”

Graham Blackley forTrad and Now
“One of the many highlights of this album is the effortless way in which Sadie and Jay change gear from one musical style to another without ever sacrificing cohesivness or losing thier identity”
