Rutherglen & Corowa Unlocked - Royal Hotel Corowa
Event Information
Description
Rug up and enjoy warm hospitality, amazing stories and inspiring architecture.
Explore and celebrate the rich history and beautiful buildings during Rutherglen & Corowa Unlocked.
Take the opportunity to meet with the current owners of this historic building and be guided through the premises to see some of the more recent improvements. When first built in 1860 the Royal Hotel included a butcher’s shop, on the corner of Riesling and Sanger Streets. It didn’t take long for the hotel to expand with a billiard room and commercial rooms used by commercial travellers, surgeons, dentists, coroners and for general club meetings added.
There were show yards at the rear that held a circus. The balcony of the hotel was used as a judge’s box for the horse races from South Corowa, which raced up Deniliquin Road (now Federation Ave) along Edward St, and then up Sanger St to the finishing line in front of the Royal Hotel.
In 1881 William Martin rebuilt the back part of the hotel as a two-storey brick premise, boasting ten apartments, and a spacious ballroom measuring 44ft x 22ft.
Major renovations commenced in 1998 to return the Hotel to its former glory.
