Event description

Description

Join us for the annual Ruth Gall Memorial Lecture, celebrating the life and achievements of Associate Professor Ruth Gall (1923-2017), the first female appointed Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University (1969), and the first female Head of School in Chemistry (1978-1980).

We are honoured to welcome Professor Juliet Gerrard, Chief Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern.

Lecture title: Memoirs of a lapsed chemist

Abstract:
An overview of the highlights (and low lights) of a career that started in an organic chemistry lab in Oxford and somehow made its way to the Prime Minister’s Office in Aotearoa New Zealand. Along the way we will make pit stops to examine how enzymes are inhibited, what makes croissants fluffy, and how to harness the amazing ability of proteins to self assemble for use in nanotechnology.

About the speaker:
Professor Gerrard trained at Oxford University where she completed both Honours and Doctorate degrees in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry. A scientist at Crop & Food Research, she was appointed Lecturer in Biochemistry at the University of Canterbury in 1998 where she became Professor and Director of the Biomolecular Interaction Centre until 2014.

She is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Chemical Sciences and is now the Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland. Her research interests cut across biochemistry, chemistry, health, agriculture, food science and biomaterial design. Her interdisciplinary and collaborative research incorporates both fundamental and applied research and includes collaborations in the UK, USA and Australia.

This event is an initiative of the School of Chemistry's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, with support from the SAGE program within the University of Sydney.
