Description

Recent Research on the Flora and Fauna of Lake Macleod

Talk by Dr. Chris Kavazos (PhD graduate) and his supervisor Professor Pierre Horwitz

In 2011 Chris came to Western Australia to study for his PhD the Northern Ponds of the Lake Macleod salt lake system, located about one thousand kilometres north of Perth. Based at Edith Cowan University in Perth, with Professor Pierre Horwitz as his main supervisor, and having spent lots of time in the field, Chris now probably knows these Northern Ponds better than anyone else. His project was one of several produced under a Research Agreement between the Centre for Ecosystem Management at ECU, and Dampier Salt Ltd, a subsidiary of the Rio Tinto group, that sought to address knowledge gaps for the ecology and biodiversity of the system. This Talk will provide an overview of research undertaken over the last five years, including work done on the mangrove, fish, invertebrates, shore birds and microbial communities.

Pierre Horwitz is a Professor in the School of Science at the Joondalup Campus of Edith Cowan University. His current research and teaching interests include the philosophy and sociology of Science, aquatic ecology, natural resource management, sustainability, and the nexus between health and ecology.

In 2016 Chris Kavazos gained his PhD in Microbial Ecology from the School of Natural Sciences at Edith Cowan University. He is currently submitting papers from his work, the first of which has just been published "Biogenic processes or terrigenous inputs? Permanent water bodies of the Northern Ponds in the Lake MacLeod basin of Western Australia" in Marine and Freshwater Research. In 2011 Chris graduated from the University of Wollongong with a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) Class 1 Honours. Since February 2017 he has been an academic tutor at ECU.
