Description

Qualitative Research Network Hub Monthly Seminar

'Role conflict and questions of rigour: Working with peer/community researchers'

Dr Julie Mooney-Somers, University of Sydney

Based in the Sydney Health Ethics (previously VELiM) at the University of Sydney, Dr Julie Mooney-Somers brings a wealth of experience in conducting both mixed-methods and critical qualitative health research. In this discussion, Julie will talk through the role and inclusion of peer/community researchers in qualitative research. Drawing on a few case studies from a forthcoming co-authored chapter (with Anna Olsen), she will work through a range of ethical, logistical, and methodological factors that can arise from a process that can be both challenging and extremely rewarding. This discussion will undoubtedly be of great relevance, particularly for established qualitative researchers who wish to collaborate with community-based researchers. You can visit her profile at: www.juliemooneysomers.com

Forthcoming: Mooney-Somers, J & Olsen, A (2018) Role Conflict and Questions of Rigour: Working with Community Researchers in Sexual Health. In Tolich, M & Iphofen, R (eds) The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research Ethics. Sage: London

About the QRN Hub Monhtly Seminar:

Whilst the seminar group is hosted at UNSW, it is free and open to anyone who is interested in coming along – all backgrounds and levels of experience are welcome. It is an informal, interdisciplinary discussion group focused on interests and issues relating to conducting qualitative research. The seminar format is always flexible. While one facilitator will lead the discussion, often briefly introducing the topic through some suggested readings, the discussion is aimed at drawing together knowledge shared through other people’s experiences and perspectives. Please contact the QRN Hub manager, Dr Ally Gibson (a.gibson@unsw.edu.au), if you would ever like to lead a seminar.
