Description

“The future of harvesting systems will certainly be robotic. The question is how we get there.”
– Associate Professor Rien Visser, School of Forestry, University of Canterbury.

Learn the latest about operational autonomous and remote controlled machinery from around the world on Monday 4th December 2017 at the Park Royal, Melbourne Airport, from 10 am through to 3 pm.

While technology is advancing rapidly, forest settings are complex compared to other industries such as mining or manufacturing and automation.

Having conducted an extensive review funded by FWPA, Associate Professor Rien Visser from the University of Canterbury’s School of Forestry will update CEOs and Senior Research Managers on what’s available today, technology likely to be developed in the medium term and what technologies are likely to be available in one or two decades. That is the devices and systems that will be used to process the trees that were planted this year. A copy of the technology review will be emailed to those registered for the workshop on 13 November and will be available from the FWPA website.

The extraction and subsequent transportation of stems/logs with GPS guided systems are likely to become the first operations that become robotic, while partial automation will benefit elements such as stem processing, according to Prof. Visser.

In the longer term, automated felling in a plantation environment is also set to become economically feasible.

Prof. Visser will explore existing automation and future examples in:

  • Felling and processing at the stump
  • Extraction to the landing (skid)
  • Processing and loading on the landing
  • Transportation from landing to market
  • Planting
  • Silviculture

The presentation will be followed by a facilitated workshop discussion to identify Australian industry research needs in this area along with potential research partners and funding schemes that could be utilised.
