Event description

Description

The meeting will begin with an informal networking session at 12pm, followed with a presentation at 12.30pm by Dr Ashleigh Filtness from Loughborough University (UK).

Presentation overview:

Driver sleepiness is recognised as a problem in long distance, monotonous driving. However, it is not well understood in the context of city driving This presentation will give an overview of the outcomes from a large scale investigation with London city bus drivers, which sought to 1) determine prevalence of, 2) identify factors contributing to, and 3) propose potential solutions to mitigate and manage driver sleepiness in London bus drivers. A multi-methods approach including, policy review, focus groups, interviews, survey and on-road observation identified that drivers regularly experience sleepiness when driving the bus. This was described as part of the job and something not to be discussed. Bus driver sleepiness is a complex issue for which there is no quick fix. In developing solutions it is important to take a holistic approach and recognised shared responsibility between drivers, operators, regulators and wider stakeholders. By observing the difficulties drivers face it is clear that driver sleepiness is a problem in city driving. Potential solutions are proposed across 5 key areas: Education, working conditions, rosters, open culture, and health.

Dr Ashleigh Filtness is a Lecturer in the Transport Safety at Loughborough University, UK. She has been working in road safety research for the past 12 years, previously at the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland, and Monash University Accident Research Centre, Australia. She has authored over 50 peer-reviewed journals articles, book chapters and conference papers. Her primary research interest is sleepiness and its association with impaired performance and safety.

The presentation will be then followed by further discussion of research developments and activities of the organisations present.

Please note that the meeting will be held at QUT’s Kelvin Grove campus.
