Event description

Description

As with all manufacturers, Australian manufacturing must compete on a global stage. Staying competitive with global trends will allow them to tread water. Pushing forward with innovative practice is essential to be at the forefront of the productivity curve. This workshop is aimed at combining those elements essential for innovative change – Industry expertise, and academic research. This workshop is about exploring what options are open to Industry, what Industry needs now, what Industry needs in the future and how research can play a part in enabling cutting edge Australian manufacturing.

Robotics has been with us for a long time now. Initially, companies were hesitant to install industrial robots in their plants due to the difficulty in programming robots. This combined with traditional yellow cage installations renders robots unsuitable for high-mix-low-volume production. Recent trends point to a new type of robot – Collaborative robots, which are safe to work alongside humans, easy to program, simple to set up and cost effective on highly varied tasks. Parallel to this development, there have been big strides in machine vision systems, as well as computer-aided-manufacturing software making offline programming possible, all without stopping production.

In this workshop, industry leaders from the field of robotics, vision and CAM will present the latest technology in these areas. We encourage discussion with these experts, and to explore how researchers / academics can push the knowledge forward for the benefit of industry. This discussion can also include what skills universities need to provide our future engineers with.
