The Place of Courage will be South Australia’s first dedicated contemporary commemorative public art space to not only honour women who rest in peace but also be a place of contemplation, remembrance, giving courage, strength, hope and healing.
This is a first-of-its kind space to publicly acknowledge the impact and ongoing trauma of domestic and family violence in our community and to pay tribute to the many lives lost. This public place is designed as a healing space, blending art with nature to create a peaceful, safe, and respectful environment.
Christies Beach was one of the first women’s shelters in South Australia, established in 1970s by trailblazer Helen Oxenham, OAM. An advocate for women’ rights for over 40 years, Helen founded Spirit of Women in 2015, and conceived The Place of Courage – Australia’s first public tribute to the victims and survivors of domestic and family violence. The shelter was established in November 1977.
