Event description

Description

Educated at Newcastle and Edinburgh universities, founding Director Richard Murphy of Richard Murphy Architects taught 4 years at Edinburgh University, which included the researched work of Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa at the Castelvecchio, Verona.

Richard's practice founded in 1991 has won 22 RIBA awards, more than any other practice in Scotland, delivering an impressively diverse typology of projects ranging from private residences in Scotland to foreign offices abroad.

In 2006 Richard was voted “Scottish Architect of the Year” by readers of Prospect Magazine, and in the Queen’s Honours List, 2007, he was awarded an OBE. In 2015 Richard's own house, which he designed for himself on an Edinburgh New Town World Heritage Site, was given a RIBA National Award and won the RIBA/Channel 4 House of the Year Award 2016.

The lecture entitled "Richard Murphy - Carlo Scarpa at Castelvecchio" explores the work of the great twentieth century Venetian architect CARLO SCARPA (1906-1978) through the critical and technical lens of Richard Murphy, and comes fresh off the back from the new and massively expanded edition of his original book “Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited”.

Richard has extensive experience in architectural publishing, writing, critiquing and lecturing, from the mid 80's, which stretches beyond Scarpa to other greats like Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The book “Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited" has been described as “a masterpiece,” (Robert McCarter), “brilliant”(Kenneth Frampton), and “the essence of architecture” (Hugh Pearman), and speaks volumes of Richard's authority on the works of Carlo Scarpa.

Join us for a night with one of the greatest architects currently practicing from Scotland for an invaluable insight on the work of one of the greatest architects to have lived and practiced in the 20th century. One whose work continues to influence how many of us practise space making to this day.
