About this event

October Lecture 21.10.2021

Oases in the desert - revisiting the mound springs in the north of our state.

Thursday 21st October 5pm for 5.30pm.

The Royal Geographical Society of South Australia warmly welcomes Fellow of the Society Colin Harris to present our October lecture. Please note that this lecture will be held in the Hetzel Theatre, Institute Building, corner of North Terrace and Kintore Avenue (adjacent to SLSA).

Forty years ago Colin Harris delivered his Presidential address to the Society on the mound springs, outstanding features of the outback environment. The springs were an unfailing source of water for Indigenous people and were fundamental to European exploration and settlement of large areas of inland Australia.

Forty years on, the springs remain under pressure from mining, pastoralism and tourism. Colin will review the current state of the springs and the effectiveness of our conservation efforts. Join us for what promises to be an excellent lecture.

This event is free for members of the RGSSA (although we do appreciate a gold coin donation). Non-members are welcome to attend and tickets are available for $10 per person. Book on line through this site. The RGSSA welcomes new members who wish to make a contribution to the success of the society.
