Glass Specification

An opportunity for Design Integration
CPD Presentation - 2 formal CPD points

Presented by Simon Barnes - Arup
Monday February 17, 2020 - 6pm - 8pm
Skypark, 699 Collins Street, Melbourne

Glass sets the tone and future direction for the design of a building and is the key decision for architects and their clients in the pre planning phase of their project. The competing variables of daylight, Views, Solar Access, Glare, Thermal Comfort, Architectural Intent and Site Constraints will often work in opposition to one another, but with careful analysis can be combined successfully.

Architects need to consider these factors when specifying and designing with glass for their building facades. Their choices will also depend on the special circumstances of each project. Manufacturers provide different glass products in a variety of colours, textures and patterns than ever before allowing for enhanced creativity and design excellence in buildings.

Light transmittance, reflectance and absorption that occur in a particular pane of glass can be selected based on an increasing choice of coatings and treatments. These attributes affect not only the appearance, but also the visual and energy performance of the glass and the overall building where it is installed.

This presentation by Simon Barnes from Arup will consider:

  • Choices in glass available for architects/builders - what products are available for architectural application?
  • How the architectural intent of the project influences transparency, reflectivity (internally and externally) and transmitted/ reflected colour.
  • How lighting, environment factors & exterior material selections (that are viewed alongside the glass) influence specification decisions?
  • How glass compares as a sustainable building material? Recyclability, energy performance.
  • Case studies of Glass facades and projects throughout Australia.
