Event description
In this timely session we discuss what happens to built heritage that has been affected by disaster

About this Event

Disaster has long-term emotional, social, economic and community consequences. Amongst our landscapes and towns, built heritage, whether private, community or government-owned contributes to our communities' sense of belonging and shared stories - and so their loss can seriously affect our wellbeing.’

Post-disaster, there are complex and contested considerations at play: do we restore our built heritage or give it new life with a new purpose? Or is the damage to physical sites so extreme that we must consider retaining it as a ruin or removing it? What dilemmas will we face when trying to maintain ongoing relationships with places that no longer physically exist? How will our decisions today affect future generations?

In this panel session we explore what today's decisions will mean for our community identities. We consider what value remnant heritage plays in our cities and towns and the ways in which it serves as source of resilience to our communities.

We offer a practical checklist to help individuals and communities consider and discuss these issues. We call on the collective experience of multiple speakers to capture case studies that represent the broad, deeply felt issues that will lead to local post-disaster management decisions for our built heritage.

This session will be conducted as a panel discussion with each speaker offering a short insight into their specialist topic. Following this introduction, our Chair will explore broad questions and concepts related to the topics of restore, rejuvenate and ruin. This session will be of interest to individuals and communities facing the complexities related to the future of our built heritage.
