Course Overview

The RTI (Response to Intervention) Model is a framework that has been designed for use in schools to provide comprehensive intervention and support to students at risk of literacy underachievement, including those with dyslexia. It is a prevention oriented approach linking assessment and instruction that is used to inform educators’ decisions about how best to teach their students. A central goal of RTI is to minimise the well-documented academic and behavioural risks associated with long-term poor learning outcomes.

This course will enable principals and teachers to understand and deliver the RTI model in their schools. Co-designed by SPELD Victoria and The Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation WA specifically for Victorian schools.

  • Introduction and overview of course content and goals

  • Setting the scene

  • Defining Features of Specific Learning Difficulties

  • The Response to Intervention (RTI) Service Delivery Model

  • Introducing a three-tier or three-wave model

  • Ensuring Inclusion of All Students through Intervention, Differentiation and Accommodations

  • Social and Emotional Needs and Parental involvement

  • Future Planning and Review

Tessa Calder

Tessa Calder, is an experienced teacher in the Victorian Government school sector. She is the former Principal
of Highton Primary (a school that is involved in the Inclusion Support Program) who now works as a mentor and
coach for new principals, teachers and pre-service teachers.
