Description

Working with patients at risk of suicide and self-harm can be a stressful experience for health professionals. The risk for suicide is heightened among individuals with major physical illnesses, and people withmental health issues experience far higher rates of chronic and complex physical health issues. Northern Health Psychology department has developed training for Allied Health practitioners to increase their confidence to respond effectively to suicidal and self-harm ideation. You will leave this training session with competency in screening for and initial management of SASH risk. You will also be able to ensure clients are directed to the most appropriate source for comprehensive assessment or ongoing management.

The training will include:

  • Factors associated with increased suicide risk

  • Discussion of clinician experiences

  • The impact of clinician responses to suicide and self-harm risk

  • Components of risk assessment & their delivery

  • Development of a safety plan

  • Clinician self-care

  • Case discussion & question time
