Description

Tax law is complex and open to interpretation. Tax disputes are inevitable. Achieving the best possible resolution of disputes requires a combination of knowledge and skills. This four day workshop aims to develop that knowledge and those skills. The course will progress through the life cycle of a tax dispute from risk reviews and audits to appeals to courts and tribunals. Along the way, assessments, objections, alternative dispute resolution and settlements will be considered, among other issues. The focus will be on both the black letter law and practical insights drawn from experience.

The issues covered by the course will include:

  • Non-renewable taxes
  • Resource tax policy
  • Taxation on the acquisition or disposal of mining and petroleum assets
  • Taxation on the acquisition or disposal of mining and petroleum companies
  • Operational tax matters
  • International tax matters such as offshore marketing hubs and outbound investment in resource project

The course will be led by Jared Clements. Jared is an Associate Director in the Centre for Mining, Energy and Natural Resources Law. Prior to joining the Law School, Jared practised as a corporate lawyer at Allens Linklaters, Ashurst and PricewaterhouseCoopers. His experience includes advising clients on share and business acquisitions, asset sales, mining transactions, joint ventures, and corporate restructures. Jared also has expertise commercial litigation and corporate insolvencies.
