Description

Think your research could have global impact? Now what?

Hear from researchers who have pursued a different path to gain global impact for their work - building a successful startup business.

Uniseed - a partner of the University of Sydney - provides investment funding to commercialise research-developed technologies that bring significant impact to communities. Uniseed has brought together a panel of researchers turned entrepreneurs that will share the highs and lows of their experience - from discussions with the Tech Transfer Office, leaving the university (or not!), raising capital, forming teams and being in business.

Every journey is different, but all have been fulfilling.

Our panel includes:

  • Prof Salah Sukkarieh is a Professor of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the Australian Centre for Field Robotics at the University of Sydney. Salah has secured and led commercial development programs totalling over $80M from some of the largest global multi-national companies in mining, aviation and agriculture. Salah was awarded the 2017 CSIRO Eureka Prize for Leadership in Innovation and Science, and the 2019 NSW Australian of the Year nominee.
  • Dr Michael Harvey is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Brisbane Materials which is developing high performance functional optical coatings. Michael studied physics at the University of Queensland where he gained a PhD in Optical Materials and has worked with a number of innovative renewable and materials technology companies.
  • Dr Melissa Mail has wide experience with industry engagement and the commercialisation of innovative intellectual property emanating from academic research institutions. Melissa has negotiated commercial agreements and licenses with start-ups, large privately held companies and listed corporates in the fields of medical devices, mining, advanced materials, defence, agri-tech and software. Prior to joining the University of Sydney in 2015 at CDIP (Commercial Development Industry Partnerships), Melissa worked as a patent attorney in a leading independent intellectual property firm.
  • Ashlea Wallington is the Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Sydney Union (USU), heading up the award-winning INCUBATE startup accelerator. Ashlea also facilitates delivery of the University of Sydney Business School’s MBA Capstone Lean Design subject, is a non-executive director for Writing NSW and is part of the City of Sydney’s Ideas Lab Advisory Group. Ashlea’s professional background spans loyalty, partnerships, user-design and innovation practice across media, not-for-profit, travel, insurance and retail.
  • Natasha Rawlings is a tech entrepreneur who has led, founded and mentored early and mid-stage tech start-ups, with a particular focus on creating revenue through sales and marketing. Prior to this, Natasha had a successful career as a marketer holding top management positions in Australian and UK companies. Natasha is now the Sydney Investment Manager at Uniseed, who sources and manages some of Uniseed's investments.

Come and join us for a unique panel discussion followed by drinks and canapes.

Seats are limited so please register early to avoid disappointment.
