About this event

Research, study and explore

Session times: 10.00am – 12.00pm / 12.30pm – 2.30pm

Contact us in advance on for weekend visit options or if your group has special needs. Choose one of the following group sessions.

Research experience

35 persons max (including adults) per two-hour session

Recommended for Years 7-12

This experience is designed for school groups seeking to build information literacy by blending in-school preparation with onsite research. Teachers, please supply a topic for research or an assignment question when booking. A Librarian will provide search terms and suggested resources for students to use. Once onsite the group is greeted by a volunteer who leads the way to our dedicated study area where students explore their topic using State Library’s Catalogue and online resources. Short how-to videos are available to provide students with basic search skills. To complete research, students will need to bring their own devices.

Independent study

70 persons max (including adults) per two-hour session

Recommended for Years 5 - 12

If your group wishes to study independently, book our school area on level 3 including large tables for study and quiet instruction, and access to the State Reference library. Please note that dedicated librarian assistance is not provided with this booking (if you require help with assessment topics or preparation, please book a Research Experience).

*Please ensure you advise how many students will be attending when booking your ticket, this will allow our team to ensure adequate seating arrangements for your students.

To make the most of your visit we encourage students and teachers to become members prior to your visit. Please use a residential Queensland address, not the school address, when registering. Membership is free and enables students to search the catalogue and place physical items on hold, ready to collect and use during their time onsite.

Important COVID-19 information

In line with the Queensland Government’s COVID-19 restrictions, from 17 December 2021 unvaccinated people aged 16 years and over will be unable to enter Queensland Government-owned libraries, galleries and museums. This includes State Library of Queensland.

We will continue following Queensland Government advice. Given the public health directions are subject to change, please check our alerts page before your visit for the latest information.

State Library carpark access has changed

Due to Brisbane City Council’s permanent closure of Victoria Bridge to general traffic, all access to the Cultural Centre carparks is now via Stanley Place (from the Grey Street and Peel Street intersection, or Montague Road).
