Event description
What does Disability inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DiDRR) look like? Lessons learned from work in Australia and SE Asia (Seminar)

About this Event

The Public Service Research Group and the School of Business, UNSW Canberra, are proud to be hosting Professor Dale Dominey-Howes from the Asia-Pacific Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Research Group, School of Geosciences, The University of Sydney.

Professor Dale Dominey-Howes will be facilitating two Research Seminars/Workshops at UNSW Canberra.

In this 1-hour workshop, Professor Dominey-Howes explores the process of doing Disability inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DiDRR) drawing from a range of projects funded by state and Federal and Global Resilience Partnership grants in Australia and South East. First, Professor Dominey-Howes outline how and why this research activity for the Asia-Pacific Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Research Group came about before describing (1) d/Deaf inclusive DRR work in NSW and (2) wider DiDRR work in Australia and SE Asia. The remainder of the talk sets out the ongoing challenges, barriers and opportunities for making disability inclusion a lived reality in disaster risk reduction.

This workshop is open to higher degree by research students, early career academics and researchers.

What does Disability inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DiDRR) look like? Lessons learned from work in Australia and SE Asia

Abstract:

People with disabilities are four times more likely to die when a disaster strikes than those without disabilities and six per cent of all disaster-affected people acquire new disabilities from the event (UNESCAP, 2014). In recognition of the increased risk of people with disabilities to natural hazards and their accompanying disasters, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 mandates stronger inclusion of people with disabilities in all stages of DRR processes.

LOCATION:

This research seminar will be held in the School of Business Seminar Room, level 1, Building 27 at UNSW Canberra, ADFA campus.
