Event description
A pathways forum for early PhD students to discuss research data culture.

About this Event

The Australian Characterisation Community, The University of Queensland Library and the UQ Institutes are pleased to invite you to take part in this Research Data Culture event.

To be data-driven requires an overarching data culture. What resources are available to you as a researcher (computing, storage, support)? What can you do to influence effective research data culture and foster research collaboration? During the morning, we will address these questions and provide opportunities for fruitful discussions. During the afternoon you have the opportunity to attend two optional hands-on workshops, with no previous knowledge required.

This is a UQ-based event and the resources are targeted for UQ researchers (Masters by research, PhD, early and mid career postdocs and fellows). We will provide information (tools, data and culture) that will help you navigate your research career at UQ. That said, everyone is welcome to attend - be inspired to learn more about what Research Data culture entitles and promote it at your own institution! This event will be repeated in the future and collaborators are welcome.

08:45 am Registrations

09:00 am Opening and invited speakers (Culture, Library resources and training, computing resources available at UQ in Queensland and Nationally).

During registration you can make your selection.

Combined morning session

  • Prof Graham Galloway, National Imaging Facility, Translational Research Institute
  • Jenny Johnston, The UQ Library
  • Dr. Marlies Hankel, UQ Research Computer Centre
  • Samual MacDonald, Max Kelsen's genomics research group
  • Jane Frazier, Monash University eResearch

  • Dr Francis Gacenga, USQ eResearch services

Afternoon workshops

1. UQRDM workshop

The UQ Research Data Manager (UQRDM) has been specifically designed to help UQ researchers manage their project's research data effectively from project conception, to the publication and dissemination of results. Please note, if you are not enrolled at UQ, the UQ RDM workshop might not be relevant to you.

Bring your own laptop - no other prerequisites.

Instructor Fei Fu

2. Reproducible Research

Researchers genuinely want to make their research more reproducible, but sometimes don’t know where to start or are not aware of existing best practice guidelines. This workshop will take a practical approach to reproducibility by focusing on common scenarios, such as misplacing a hard drive or losing a key member of the lab, so that researchers can prepare for those scenarios, safeguard their research and make it more efficient.

Bring your own laptop - no other prerequisites.

Instructor: Paula Andrea Martinez

Who should attend?

We aim to bring together early PhD students who are working with large datasets, particularly inviting those from UQ Institutes, Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN), Global Change Institute (GCI), Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR), Mater Research Institute - UQ, Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI), Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), Centre for Advance Imaging (CAI).

People who are not from the listed institutes or are not early PhD students are as well very welcome to attend.
