Professor Amanda W. Benckhuysen
Amanda is the Johanna K. And Martin J. Wyngaarden Senior Professor of Old Testament at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Amanda’s research and teaching focuses on the Old Testament as a whole, with a particular interest in the Psalms, Wisdom Literature (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job, Song of Songs), and the classical prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Minor Prophets). She also teaches and writes in the areas of biblical hermeneutics, the history of biblical interpretation, and Christian feminism.
She is the author of “The Gospel According to Eve: A History of Women’s Interpretation” (IVP, 2019). In this book, Amanda surveys the history of the interpretation of Genesis 1-3, with a particular focus on women’s readings which affirm women’s full humanity and equal worth. The book allows women’s voices from the past to speak of Eve’s story and its implications for marriage, motherhood, preaching, ministry, education, work, voting, and more. The book is shortlisted for the 2020 Word Guild Awards.
Amanda is also the author of “Immigrants, The Bible, And You” (Calvin Press, 2020), an accessible exploration of the biblical perspective on immigration intended to help Christians reflect theologically on issues related to immigration today.
