Reliability of Electrical Supply.

Electrical engineers are actively involved in discrimination!

It is part of their job! 'Discrimination' in this case is the selection protective devices to minimize the impact of a fault on an electrical system.

The engineering requirements on electrical installations are becoming more demanding every year:

  • In 10 years the typical installed power density (Amps/m²) has doubled.
  • The key to this reliability is discrimination and cascading (backup).
  • The expectation of reliability has grown and the Australian standards have responded to this.

Reliability of supply; AS 3000 Clause 2.5.7.1

'The electrical installation shall be designed to provide a reliable supply by dividing the electrical installation into appropriate circuits and selecting protective devices with appropriate discrimination so that in the event of a fault occurring, the loss of supply resulting from operation of a protective device is minimized.'

Jeffrey Davis, Business Development Manager at NHP Electrical Engineering will outline the issues faced when addressing the reliability of electrical supply, and how this will increasingly affect electrical engineers into the future.

Jeffrey Davis

Jeff’s experience in the electrical industry is a very well rounded and he has provided a great deal of support technically for a wide range of market participants from the Electrical Contractor, Switchboard Builders, Inspectors and Consulting Engineers.

Jeff has over 39 years in the electrical industry, in which he has worked as a contractor, switchboard builder, manufacturer and technical sales consulting.

Jeff has a broad spectrum of qualifications not limited to the following:

  • RMIT- A grade Electrical Mechanic
  • Motor Control Design
  • Low Voltage Reticulation System Design
  • PLC Design System
  • RMIT - Electronic Engineer Degree
  • Licensed Electrical Inspector
  • El001 Committee Member (AS/NZS 3000)
