Established in 2008, the program has established 164 Australia–Indonesia school partnerships and directly involved over 600 Australian and Indonesian teachers in professional learning.

This immersive and blended model of professional learning supports school communities across Australia and Indonesia to build an international school partnership and learn firsthand about each other’s culture, community, and schools.

Through online and face-to-face professional learning in Australia and Indonesia, BRIDGE:

  • builds teacher capability and pedagogy to connect classrooms to the world and grow sustainable school partnerships.
  • develops global competencies in students across Australia and Indonesia by facilitating student online collaboration, supporting language learning, building digital capability, strengthening intercultural understanding and developing life-long friendships across the region.
  • establishes sustainable school partnerships and a community of learners.
  • encourages students to learn about and develop an interest in the region, as well as explore opportunities such as the New Colombo Plan and Australia Awards post-schooling.

Nominated Australian and Indonesian teachers must be available during March and August 2018 (will be assigned one cohort) for the two and a half week professional learning program in Australia for Australian and Indonesian participants involving:

  • a four-day professional learning program to explore the new partner relationships and how to plan for sustainable school partnerships through intercultural understanding and the use of new technologies in teaching and learning.
  • a two-week homestay and school visit by (two) Indonesian partner teachers to Australian partner schools will support partnership development and shared professional best practice and provide opportunities such as; partnership planning, classroom observation, team teaching, participation in staff meetings, curriculum team meetings, parental engagement, school excursions and incursions for teachers to form an understanding of their partner countries education context.

Teachers from Indonesia will participate in additional pre and post program workshops including:

  • a four-day pre-departure preparation workshop in Jakarta
  • a two-day Australia-based workshop on building knowledge and understanding of Australia for Indonesian teachers, providing an overview of Australian culture, society, history and education systems
  • a one-day post-program debriefing to reflect on Indonesian teachers’ experience in Australia and share ways forward for online engagement.

For Australian schools: Indonesian language ability is not a requirement to take part in this program, although it can offer added learning outcomes.
