Event description

Description

Australians have traditionally viewed refugee settlement as a capital city phenomenon. Much of the country’s attention and research has been focused on our largest cities. However, refugees are making new lives all across Australia. Many of these success stories can be found in Australia’s regions.

Toowoomba, Australia’s Garden City and one of the nation’s Refugee Welcome zones, will play host to the Regional Settlement Conference in 2018.

The two-day conference will showcase the success of refugee resettlement in regional cities and towns. It will highlight the roles of local community champions and community leaders in supporting successful outcomes. It will also focus on the contributions that humanitarian arrivals make to regions, and the innovative ways that challenges are overcome.

The event will bring together a broad range of expertise from settlement services, regional communities, policymakers and local champions. The conference will focus on key themes of: health and well-being; employment; education; community engagement; and cohesion.

Toowoomba is in south-east Queensland country, located on the crest of the Great Dividing Range, about 120 km west of Brisbane. It is the largest non-capital city in inland Australia, and its reputation as The Garden City stems from its 150 public parks and tree-lined streets. Its temperate climate is warm in summer and cool in winter, with four distinct seasons. Toowoomba has a long history of successfully settling diverse migrant communities and is known for its welcoming character. Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Cr Paul Antonio will greet delegates and present on Toowoomba’s experience.

Cancellation Policy: For a full refund, cancellations must be made in writing 30 days prior to the conference. Cancellations made with less than 30 days notice will not be eligible for a refund.
