Event description

Description

Welcome to the Group: Reframing Autism,

The mission of this group is to help parents and carers of children with autism to shift our focus from causes and cures, to move beyond our preoccupation with interventions and therapies, and instead to embrace the unique gifts our children have to offer.

Together, let’s re-frame our autism journeys to see the opportunity, the optimism, the hope, and the joy of parenting Children with Autism

In this Group, you can expect to be inspired by:

  • Formal presentations by autistic experts, and experts in autism, on topics that are relevant to your child (think sensory processing, wellbeing, communication possibilities, stimming, passions, mental health, inclusion, and acceptance);

  • An introduction to the neurodiversity movement, and to how it can empower you and your child;

  • An approach to appreciating your child’s individual strengths by embracing their autism, and

  • The opportunity to meet and grow with a group of like-minded parents who want to create a world which embraces their child’s exceptionalities and gifts.

This session's speaker: Hayley Clapham

Hayley Clapham is an Autistic woman, living with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, who is a passionate autism & disability advocate and the mother to two Autistic children both of whom also have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.

Inspired and driven by the experiences of herself and those of her family, her passions include educating and raising awareness about Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, promoting Autism acceptance & the neurodiversity paradigm, whilst her advocacy interests are centred around inclusion and accessibility, disability & identity, disabled parenting, disabled & neurodiverse families, health & wellbeing outcomes, women, children & disability, and the issues surrounding government services, particularly in the welfare, disability, and healthcare sectors.

Hayley is a 2018 Autism CRC Future Leaders graduate, with some of her previous advocacy experience including representing the Autistic community at an NDIA/Dept of Social Service stakeholders meeting, consulting with the international Ehlers Danlos Society, and most recently leading an NDIS focused research project with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network of Australia & New Zealand. She is a current community representative on the Campbelltown council’s DIAP advisory board.

Her topic on the day will be Self-concept, perception and identity; a protective factor for improving health & well-being outcomes in Autistic people. Hayley is going to speak with us about her journey as an Autistic woman identified later in life, her experiences parenting neurodiverse children, and the importance of self-concept, self-perception & identity in Autistic people.
