Event description

Description

'Slow Clothing' author Jane Milburn shares simple and more complex ways to transform natural-fibre garments that we hold in our wardrobe even though they may be too big, too small, dysfunctional, misshapen or outdated style. After a lifetime of making and sustainism, Jane began refashioning in earnest in 2011 when she noticed burgeoning fashion waste. Jane will show garments she has reinvented with simple tweaks, flipped upside down, chopped into new forms and cut in creative ways. We discuss upcycling options, which may include embellishing and mending, and then enact changes within the timeframe and resources to hand. We use hand-stitching and machine sewing (BYO machine).

What to bring:

  • A few garments from your wardrobe or op shop
  • Basic sewing kit (needles, threads, scissors)
  • Sewing machine (if you have one)
  • Some haberdashery items (eg elastic, bias binding, buttons, lace, fabric remnants)

What you gain:

  • a copy of Jane's book, 'Slow Clothing'
  • creative ideas for endless upcycling
  • resourcefulness and unique style
  • hands-on play for wellbeing
  • ways to reduce textile waste
  • immersion in slow clothing philosophy

BYO lunch. Tea and coffee facilities provided. Fridge & microwave available.

Minimum of 4 students, the class will be cancelled 48 hours prior if the minimum is not met.
