In this workshop, somatic experiences will guide you through an embodied understanding of astrophysics
About this event
A pair of multidisciplinary astrophysicists, movement artists, educators, and designers present “Recreo Espacial”, an educational project aimed at embodied learning of astronomy. Recreo Espacial is both ongoing research about translation between somatic experiences and astrophysical phenomena, as well as the resulting set of exercises and supporting materials to supplement learning of astronomy in the classroom. The objective is to enhance the existing rich accumulation of symbolic, largely visual representations of scientific information with embodied human experience. In the workshop the participants will be guided through an experience of key concepts in astrophysics (for example: angular momentum and energy conservation, nature of gravity / general relativity). Having acquired an embodied intuition for these foundational principles, we demonstrate the possibility of an improvisatory game in which the participants “discover” the formation of stars and planets.
