CLINICAL SKILLS WORKSHOP FOR VICTORIAN DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES (DHHS) FUNDED Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) WORKERS

Turning Point has been funded by DHHS to deliver a series of workshops designed to up skill the AOD workforce in current best practice in Intake and Assessment, Counselling Skills, Group Skills, Recovery Oriented Practice, Co-occurring Disorders and Current Issues in AOD. These workshops provide an opportunity for current workers in the AOD sector to either learn new skills or consolidate/update existing skills in these areas. Workers will be able to choose whether to attend one or two or more of these workshops depending on their professional development needs and those of the services in which they work.

Places are limited in these free workshops, so all participants are requested to provide their Manager’s contact details during registration. Managers will be contacted if participants fail to attend training without providing notice.

RECOVERY ORIENTED PRACTICE: What is it and how do you do it? Half day workshop.

Presenters: Dr Naomi Crafti & Dr Michael Savic

Recovery is a relatively new area of research and practice within the fields of addiction and mental health, but one that has gained considerable policy and practice momentum in the US, UK and Australia. This workshop will explore what we know about Recovery, what are the key issues in this area, arguments around the definition of recovery, and the merits of a recovery approach, with its origins in positive psychology, mutual aid and the patient empowerment movement. The aim of the workshop is to introduce the concepts and philosophy of recovery, the evidence base as it stands to date and the challenges it poses to current traditional treatment approaches, in particular expert-driven treatment.

The workshop will consider:

  • What is Recovery ?
  • Implications for clinical practice
  • Recovery and mutual aid
  • Recovery and therapeutic communities (TCs)
  • Peers and recovery
  • Recovery oriented clinical practice
  • Recovery capital and community development
  • Recovery and harm reduction

Dr Naomi Crafti: Senior Research/Education Fellow at Turning Point. At Turning Point, Naomi oversees the Workforce Development area. With a background in Counselling Psychology, Naomi’s main interests are in feminist counselling approaches and gendered perspectives on health, particularly in eating disorders and other addictive behaviours. What gets Naomi out of bed every morning is a love of learning and the belief that ‘knowledge is power’ (Francis Bacon). With Michael, Naomi co-ordinates the Recovery Principles unit in the Monash University Masters of Addictive Behaviours course.

Dr Michael Savic: Research Fellow in Addiction Studies at the Eastern Health Clinical School, Monash University, and at Turning Point. Michael has a PhD in Public Health from the University of Adelaide. Michael’s research focuses on alcohol and other drug use, addiction and recovery concepts, treatment and experiences of care across a number of mediums. His research is multi-disciplinary in orientation and often draws on critical approaches. With Naomi, Michael co-ordinates the Recovery Principles unit in the Monash University Masters of Addictive Behaviours course.
