Overview

Accessible housing is not a design trend; it’s an essential component and consideration in the planning of any structure.

The Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA), the Australian Network for Universal Housing Design and Ecolateral’s John Moynihan have Crossed the Threshold to develop an exciting educational endeavor for the building design industry.

John is a registered designer and builder as well as a certified LHA assessor.

All building designers and building professionals, interested in the delivery of homes for all ages and abilities, should attend ‘Crossing the Threshold. The course is an interactive webinar over five 1.5 hr blocks, focused on the practical application of accessible housing and universal housing principles. It is intended for those who design, construct and approve homes for residents of all ages and health status.

We should be future proofing the Australian housing stock to meet an ageing population.

An agreement was reached to include mandatory LHA Silver level accessibility standards in the 2022 National Construction Code by the National Building Ministers Meeting of Building on April 30th. The Victorian Building Authority, amongst other States, has welcomed the news, saying it will ensure independence for people with disabilities within their own home.

The new standards will take effect with NCC 2022. The Livable Housing Design Guidelines silver standards will ensure basic accessibility features are included in all newly constructed homes and apartments. Under the changes, new homes will be required to include features such as step free entry, step free showers, ground level accessible toilets, structural reinforcements to support grab rail installation in bathrooms and for doorways and transitional spaces to allow ease of movement.

Crossing the Threshold is a one of a kind webinar series that teaches the tenets of accessible housing, earn 7 Formal CPD points as you learn.
