Location

The Glen Hotel

24 Gaskell Street Eight Mile Plains, QLD 4113 Australia

Description

The intention of this training is to build upon clinical knowledge to enhance capacity to recognise domestic violence, respond to the needs of people disclosing domestic violence, and improve clinicians' understanding of referral options for these patients.

In Queensland there were 66,000 reports of domestic violence to the police in 2013/14. Over 15,000 domestic violence protection orders were issued to females living in Queensland in 2013. Between 2006 and 2012 there was an average of 23 deaths a year in Queensland linked to domestic violence. Health care professionals are uniquely placed to provide services for domestic and family violence victims; particularly within primary health care settings. Current international guidelines strongly recommend health care professionals offer immediate first-line support to women who disclose any form of violence or sexual violence by an intimate partner, including facilitating disclosure, offering support and referral, providing medical treatment and follow-up care, and documenting evidence. Evidence also reinforces that health care professionals should understand the relationship between poor health and exposure to domestic violence and be able to respond appropriately.
