Event description
What Happens When Realities Collides?

About this event

The digital and physical worlds are on a collision course.

Separate now, they'll merge to create a new reality in the near future. One that is weirder than a black mirror story.

On the one hand, AR promises a magical new world where virtual information is embedded in the real world. It will enable a farmer to see data from sensors monitoring moisture content overlaid onto their fields as they look across their farm. It will guide you as you assemble furniture from IKEA. As you drive a car, the directions will be overlaid on the windscreen, creating a map you drive on.

On the other hand, tangible computing will incorporate the digital into real-world objects. When your child picks up a globe of the world, it will talk to them, answering questions about countries as they are touched. Your shopping list will know what's already in the fridge, and even the kitchen bench will become a touch screen surface.

What happens when Sci-Fi meets Extended Reality?

Will our reality and truths become more profound, or will our experiences and moments-of-truth become trivialised and commoditised?

Does the individual lose their uniqueness and become one of many cookie-cut strings in the universe of templated realities?

Already we see how virtualisation replaces individuality in deepfakes and AI-enhanced digital transplants in film, art and more. How will we as a species respond?

Einstein said a long time ago that "Imagination is more important than knowledge". Anyone who has experienced a well-produced movie visited Disneyland or put on a virtual headset recently would probably attest to that.

It is predicted that soon, immersive experiences will enhance (and likely supplant) our reality. That our senses will have to adapt or evolve to fully harness the potential of imagination. The intangible has become more valuable than the tangible.

How will you as a human embrace the coming reality?

Speakers

Prof Kim Marriot - Dept Head, Human-Centred Computing

Kim will explore at the intersection points of digital and real-world environments, Kim will discuss what can be achieved today and in the near future.

Cameron Newnham - Cofounder and CTO of Fologram

Could making in mixed reality allow us to reconfigure computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM) not as a means of working to high degrees of tolerance and precision but instead as a return to craftsmanship, intuition and reflexive making?

How will the medium of MR enable new forms of collaboration between designers and manufacturers, or between humans and machines?

David Loiacono - GM Training St John Vic

Over 6400 people suffered a cardiac arrest in 2018 in Victoria alone, but only 40% received CPR from a bystander – a figure St John is hoping to improve to 90% over the next 5 years.

By incorporating VR in CPR training, St John Ambulance Victoria aims to enhance existing training by immersing the bystander in a realistic cardiac arrest scenario, therefore reducing the barrier to performing life-saving CPR when presented with a real-world emergency.

The VR CPR course also significantly reduces training time by as much as 75%, allowing St John Ambulance Victoria to deliver their premium training experience in a more efficient and economical way.

Dates are being finalised based on advice from the government, are are likely to be between 15th of July and end August. You can find out more information by following the link below and register your interest.

FAQ

Wasn't this event scheduled for August?

Yes, we originally scheduled this event for the 5th of August, but with the Victorian lockdown extended, we made the difficult decision to reschedule to October. However, this extra time has allowed us to include two other partners in the 'experience' side of the event and we have a few other ideas we want to include.

What happens if there's another snap-lockdown?

LaunchPad's team will be monitoring the current Covid guidelines from the government and may elect to delay the event for one month should a lockdown come into force. We will update you should the date change and you will be entitled to a refund.

Who get's priority if event numbers are?

Should the government advise restricted numbers for public events, then the team will confirm tickets on a first-come-first-served basis. Ticket's sold beyond the limits will be refunded.

onCovid-Safe Plan

LaunchPad will be observing safe-hygiene practices for the event including check-in registration with the government-approved App, liberal use of hand sanitiser, cleaning before and during, following social distancing guidelines.

Cancellation Policy

You are entitled to a full refund if you need to cancel with 48hrs notice prior to the event.
