Event description
Ready Set Design is a series of three events for year 11 & 12 students who are interested in building a career in the design industry.

About this event

Description

Now in its tenth year, Ready Set Design is a series of three events for year 11 & 12 secondary students who are interested in building a career in the design industry. Ready Set Design will enable you to learn about careers and tertiary programs in design, develop your folio, and practice your interview and presentation skills.

Workshop 2: Folio Bytes

These hands-on workshops explore folio development in different areas of design. All workshops are run by RMIT design teachers and include fashion and textiles, graphic design, building design/architecture, illustration and film/media. You will have the opportunity to participate in one session from the five options below.

Please nominate the workshop that most closely matches the area of design you are interested in. Click ‘register’ and select ONE of the five available workshops - they all run at the same time, so it is not possible to attend more than one session.

You will be given a 15 minute break halfway through the workshop time, as well as time after the workshop ends to ask questions and view current RMIT student portfolios, should you wish to do so.

WORKSHOP OPTIONS

Fashion & Textiles

Do you enjoy a design process that allows for inspiration and expression of your ideas?

Join fashion designer Clea Garrick to learn how to visually represent a mood board. In this workshop, you will learn how to get started on your path to clear creative communication. You will make your own mood-board that captures the overall feeling of your design ideas.

After completing this workshop you will come away with concepts that can be further developed for a fashion or textile design folio.

Graphic Design

This workshop is for students who are interested in studying graphic design, design or communication design. Guided by graphic designer Gustavo Morainslie, you will explore the principles of creative ideas and graphic design and use these to develop a poster that raises awareness about an environmental issue.

The workshop will discuss outstanding posters on varying social issues before working on a creativity demonstration to generate strong ideas for a poster design.

After completing this workshop you will come away with concepts or work that can be further developed for a dynamic and expressive graphic design folio.

Building Design/Architecture

This workshop is for students who are interested in studying building design, architectural design or landscape architecture. Led by two designers, you will explore form, design and modelmaking for the purposes of generating and communicating your exciting design ideas.

After completing this workshop you will come away with concepts or work that can be further developed for an architectural design folio.

Drawing for Design

This workshop is for students who would like to build confidence and skills in drawing for design. Drawings are used by designers to share ideas with others and share what's in your imagination.

You will be guided through a series of freehand drawing exercises and approaches to translate 2D and 3D ideas to paper. The skills learnt in this session apply to a broad range of art and design fields including visual arts, illustration, industrial, product or furniture design, jewellery design, automotive or engineering.

Story Boards for Film

Learn practical storyboarding skills and film planning techniques from a film director and RMIT film/media lecturer.

You will be guided through the process of creating a story board for film/animation purposes to communicate your design ideas and creative vision. By the end of this workshop you will have the fundamental understanding of the skills and processes involved in creating an effective, creative and practical storyboard for the purposes of communicating your ideas to other media professionals or when submitting creative work for tertiary program applications.

The Folio Bytes workshops are offered on-campus on Saturday the 26th of June, except for one.

The Folio Bytes 'Digital Portfolio' workshop will be held online on Wednesday the 30th of June twice (refer to the 'Folio Bytes (online)' event page for more information).

To maximise your creative potential, improve your portfolio and further enhance your creative work you might wish to register for both events.

Please note: this program is available exclusively to SNAP students whose schools have been invited to participate. If you are unsure whether or not your school can participate, you can check with the SNAP team by emailing SNAP@rmit.edu.au.

After registering, students aged under 18 will need to download the consent form. It must be signed by a parent/carer. Students who do not return the signed consent form will be unable to participate. If you cannot locate the form after clicking the link above, try right-clicking and opening in a new tab. Otherwise please check your downloads folder.

COVID Safety: Please bring a mask with you and adhere to the set COVID Safety instructions for the event and venue, which includes maintaining a social distance of 1.5m, signing into the RMIT Event Wifi and signing the health declaration using the provided QR code on the day. Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell.
