Please use this form to book your timed session to access records and use research facilities in our Reading Room.

About this Event

Queensland State Archives is now open to the public following the release of the government’s roadmap to easing Queensland’s restrictions. Measures are now in place to create a safe place to visit, and a safe workplace for our staff and volunteers. This includes mandatory wearing of masks, limiting visitor numbers while COVID-19 restrictions are in place to ensure social distancing, and following recommended hygiene measures. Pre-booked sessions are available at 9am-12.30pm or 1.30pm – 4.30pm, Monday-Friday and the second Saturday of each month.

Our Conditions of Entry

  • Visitors must not have tested positive to COVID-19
  • Visitors must not be exhibiting any symptoms of cold, flu or illness
  • Visitors must not been exposed to someone who has tested positive for confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the last 14 days
  • Visitors, or their immediate household members, must not be awaiting test results for COVID-19
  • Visitors must not have travelled overseas or to a declared COVID-19 hotspot in the last 14 days
  • Face masks must be worn while in the Reading Room and other public areas such as the Foyer
  • Hands must be washed before entering the Reading Room
  • No food or drink items can be brought inside QSA (bottled water is ok, but must be stored in a locker)
  • Social distancing of 1.5m must be maintained during the visit to QSA
  • Please bring your own pencil. Visitors are welcome to bring their own laptop or smart phone device to order records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are sessions split between morning and afternoon?

QSA will close from 12.30-1.30pm each day to allow cleaners to clean all Reading Room work spaces, lockers and toilets. Visitors are asked to go off site during this time.

Am I able to book a whole day?

You're welcome to book a morning and afternoon session in the same day, so long as there is availability. We ask that during the closure period of 12.30-1.30pm you vacate the premises.

If coming with a friend or partner do I need to make a separate booking to the Reading Room?

Yes. The booking system is in place to help us manage the number of people in the Reading Room and enable us to do contact tracing if required. As a result, all visitors to the Reading Room will need to book a session. Unless you are from the same household, social distancing requirements will need to be observed in line with Queensland Government recommendations.

Can I just turn up on the day to access the Reading Room?

Due to limited numbers of visitors allowed at any one time, only visitors with online bookings are permitted to use the Reading Room. If there are still available spaces to book that day we can assist in completing this online form before entry. If all time slots are booked out for the day you will have to return when there is availability.

Will I be able to use the Reader’s Lounge facility for tea, coffee and food storage?

No – at this time the Reader’s Lounge will remain closed to the public. Visitors are requested to have their lunch off site and refrain from bringing food and drink inside QSA.

Which services will be available?

All services will remain available in a limited number due to social distancing measures. This includes:

  • Access to original records
  • Copying services
  • Use of microfilm readers
  • Use of search terminals

Will I be able to access original records?

Yes – open records will be accessible to view in the Reading Room. All original records accessed will then enter a 7-day period of quarantine before further access is granted. If your requested record is currently in quarantine, access will not not available until after the 7-day period is finished.

What hygiene and social distancing practices will be in place?

For the health and safety of visitors and staff:

  • Visitors will be asked if they have COVID-19 symptoms and turned away if they display any of these symptoms
  • Visitors will be required to wear masks in all public areas including the Reading Room and foyer
  • Hand sanitizing stations are set up at the entrance and inside the Reading Room. Visitors are asked to only use the supplied hand sanitisers which have been approved for record management purposes
  • If you are handling original records, our first preference is clean, freshly washed hands, not sanitizer
  • Visitors must sanitise their hands before using computers and microfilm readers, and wipe down these machines after use
  • QSA staff will be taking extra measures to protect the records and ask anyone using the finding aids to wear gloves
  • Sneeze guards are installed at the reception, the archivist desk and between search terminals and microfilm readers
  • Safety bins are located around the room for tissues, wipes and gloves disposal
  • All surfaces will be wiped down after each use
  • Researcher desks are reduced and spaced with to accommodate 4m2 per person
  • Distance dots on the floor will mark safe distances when lining up at the reception and archivist desks
  • QSA will be closed each day from 12.30-1.30pm to allow cleaners to clean all research desks, work stations, lockers and toilets

Can I use my own hand-sanitiser?

It is recommended that researchers handle original records with clean dry hands and don't sanitise their hands immediately prior to handling original records. QSA will provide wipes and hand sanitiser for researcher to use when not handling original records.

Do I have to provide personal contact information for the booking?

Yes. You will need to provide some contact information to confirm the booking and to assist us in contacting you in case changes occur to the booking.

Requirement to collection contact information for contact tracing:

Under s362B of the Public Health Act 2005 and the Restrictions on Businesses, Activities and Undertakings Direction, QSA is required to collect the name, contact number, and email address of all visitors for contact tracing purposes.

The information provided for your booking will be used to create attendee lists for each day. This list will be used to confirm who was in the Reading Room on a particular date, and be provided to Queensland Health for contact tracing purposes if requested.

QSA will securely store this information until it can be lawfully destroyed in accordance with the Direction and the Public Records Act 2002. QSA will not disclose your personal information to any other third parties or use it for another purpose without your consent, unless required by law or requested by Queensland Health.

How can I access original records online?

You can access digitised records or order a digital copy through our website. Please note that our ability to meet demand for digital copies and turnaround times for reference enquiries may be impacted during the current restrictions.

Can I still order digital copies of records that aren’t available online?

Yes - we will continue to provide digitisation services to the public at this time. Use the Request digital copy function within ArchivesSearch to order copies.
