Event description

Description

Story Dogs is a fun and unique reading support program designed for children who have reading difficulties, or who are reluctant readers. Children spend approximately 20 minutes reading books appropriate to their reading level to trained companion dogs and their handlers. It is a low pressure opportunity for children to learn to enjoy reading, with a non-judgemental audience and in a supportive environment.

Term 1 2018 sessions

  • Kippax Library – Saturday afternoons
  • Gungahlin Library – Wednesday evenings

We recommend attending at least 4 weekly sessions in a row to benefit from this program.

A Parental Consent Form must be completed before a child can participate in the program. It is assumed that a child who is strongly afraid of dogs or who had behaviours which may be detrimental to dogs is not given permission. The parental consent form and additional information about the program will be given to you at your first session.

Story Dogs is a Not for Profit organisation and registered charity. It is run by trained volunteers. During the session, the dog will be on its lead at all times and the handler will be with the dog and child at all times. Although the dog is immaculately groomed, fully wormed with flea protection, children with allergies are recommended not to be involved with the program.
