Description

Who needs democracy in education, anyway?

An open panel discussion with Professor Pat Thomson, Professor Bob Lingard, and Professor Martin Mills

Over the last three decades, there has been a pervasive rise in market-oriented ideologies and practices in educational policy and governance. Some have argued that economic rationalism, the relative decline in public-sector funding, and privatisation have overturned democratic modes of governance. In Australia, there have been sustained challenges to the working conditions of educators across all sectors, attacks on inclusive policies, curricula, and pedagogies, and a steady rise of commercial and for-profit organisations in the development of curriculum, assessment, and training. For some, at their heart, these shifts have challenged the foundations of the relationship between education and democratic governance.

This panel brings together three leading scholars, Professor Pat Thomson, Professor Bob Lingard, and Professor Martin Mills, who will draw upon their extensive research to debate the prompt: “Who needs democracy in education, anyway?” in an interactive and relaxed discussion format over drinks and finger food. Following the prepared remarks by each speaker, there will be an extended opportunity for conversation, questions, and discussion.

RE4D Pedagogy in the Pub is open to all conference attendees free of charge. Finger food will be provided courtesy of the Centre for Education Training and Work in the Asian Century (CETWAC) at RMIT University. Participants are invited to purchase drinks at their own expense.

Pedagogy in the Pub will run between 6pm--8:30pm in the following format:

  • Drinks and Finger Food: 6:00 - 6:45pm (guests are invited to order drinks at their own expense throughout the evening)
  • Guest Speakers: 6:45 - 7:30pm
  • Open Discussion: 7:30 - 8:30pm
