RBMS Brisbane seminar

Laidley Creek restoration project

The River Basin Management Society is pleased to host this seminar with Healthy Land and Water, Port of Brisbane, Queensland Urban Utilities and The University of Queensland

The Laidley Creek restoration project won the Sustainable Water Management Award and Minister’s Grand Prize at the 2016 Healthy Waterways Awards. The project involves the restoration of several kilometres of Laidley Creek – adjacent to valuable horticultural land – which had become badly degraded over time. The restoration works will significantly reduce sediment and nutrient loads entering Laidley Creek, the Brisbane River and ultimately Moreton Bay. The sediment and nutrients abated from the works help provide offsite treatment options for both Port of Brisbane and Queensland Urban Utilities.

In March 2017 a large flood event, associated with rainfall from Cyclone Debbie, occurred in Laidley Creek. The completed works were effective at reducing channel erosion and promoting sediment accretion. Event monitoring undertaken by The University of Queensland highlighted the importance of the project and ongoing investment in the restoration of the Laidley Creek catchment.

The seminar will include short presentations from:

  1.     Michael Linde on Port of Brisbane’s drivers for the project
  2.    Cameron Jackson on Queensland Urban Utilities’ drivers for the project
  3.    Paul McDonald (Healthy Land and Water) on project implementation
  4.    Al Grinham (The University of Queensland) on the findings from the 2017 event monitoring

Drinks and nibbles will be served from 5.30pm. The seminar will commence at 6 pm.
