RATTLE / DRUM BEATER MAKING WORKSHOP
Event Information
About this Event
You are warmly invited to attend this one day, traditional rattle making workshop in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges Victoria, at the home and studio of Ella who curates Desert Owl Studio.
This beautiful intimate event will introduce you to the traditional relationship to rattle making taught to Ella by her teacher and mentor. These skills will be passed down to you as we sit in circle and walk the wheel together. Ella will act as guide and mentor throughout the process. There will be time for story telling, group sharing and deep connection to your own power instrument that will aid you in your healing journey.
We will work with many allies, travel with them throughout the day and imbue their magic and medicine into your own unique talisman piece.
Raw materials will be provided on the day as well as pieces to embellish. It is encouraged that you bring with you anything that you wish to add to your own rattle .
Lunch will be provided. Please message me privately for any dietary requirements. All food will be vegetarian/ Vegan. Spring water will be available for drinking as well as herbal tea throughout the day. We encourage you to please bring with you the following:
- Warm clothing as the weather here can change dramatically
-A water bottle
-Any materials that you wish to further add to your piece
-Pen and paper if you so wish
Ceremonial Rattle Use:
Cultures from all over the world, since time immemorial have used sound and rhythm in sacred ceremony, healing and performance. These instruments were a fundamental part of many different tribal groups in their healing practices. The history and use of these sacred instruments will be explored throughout this gathering for a deeper understanding of their power and purpose. Working together and weaving our intentions collectively will imbue a deeper and more profound relationship to your own sacred instrument.
It will be an honour to share this day with you.
ABOUT DESERT OWL:
DESERT OWL is a small and independent studio based in the Dandenong Ranges Victoria. Desert Owl is a textile studio that draws homage to an ancient art and practice of tanning and utilising bones, leather and all materials that are gifted by nature. All pieces that are weaved into sacred adornments are honoured wholly- nothing is wasted.
Ella opened Desert Owl after spending many years working within the Aid Work sector, helping communities in post war conflict. There were many nights spent weaving with widowed women in bombed out refugee camps in East Timor, Burma and Kashmir. It was sitting in the dim lights of these refugee camps, weaving and learning, that a desire was born to never forget the 'old ways of being'. This became and is central to the work that Desert Owl gifts to the world. Ella continues to support Indigenous communities world wide. Half of the workshop ticket sales will be going to Survival International, a grass roots NGO that support vulnerable tribal groups world wide.
This is our first workshop and will be an incredible day long journey . With immense gratitude and love - Ella
