Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

In 2010 Professor Julianne Holt-Lunstad published a paper that warned of a health epidemic that the world had never seen. It wasn’t obesity, it wasn't addiction, and despite all the articles your friend who owns a stand-up desk shares on facebook, it wasn't "sitting".

It was loneliness.

82% of Australians believe loneliness is increasing, and none feel this impact more closely than elderly people. Research shows that a lack of social connection is often associated with up to a 50% higher risk of early death.

Rather Than Later is a community initiative that connects young "Millenial" artists to isolated residents within aged care. During a period of three months, artists and residents meet once a week to share stories, advice, and skills.

The Rather Than Later Festival is the final stage in these artists' journeys. Using creative reflections, installations, and performances to explore how we can listen in ways that transform “old people” into elders.

Featuring poetry, monologues, envelope art, and a chess-based metaphorical journey, there will be something for everyone. Tickets are priced on a pay what you feel basis, and include a serve of paella for dinner! All proceeds go to keeping this volunteer-run initiative alive.
