Event description

Description

You are warmly invited to join us for the third in our series of lunchtime film screenings, featuring the award-winning documentary, Wik vs Queensland.

Presented with the support of Great Place To Work as part of our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), this will be an opportunity for us to come together to develop a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures; continue the conversation and generate mutual respect.

BYO lunch. Free popcorn provided!

Written and directed by Dean Gibson, Wik vs Queensland is a landmark feature documentary that takes us inside the High Court’s historic decision in 1996 to grant native title to the Wik peoples of Cape York, and the demonization that followed at the hands of politicians and media.

With unique access to the key players of that moment in history, and featuring never-before seen footage of the young Noel Pearson and Marcia Langton, Wik vs Queensland tells a very personal story from the Wik Peoples’ perspective, set again the backdrop of a tumultuous time in Queensland’s history.

This powerful film asks what can be learned from the way Australia chose to respond to the “Wik Decision” and why it still matters today.
