Event Details

Key Information

The annual RAdelaide training event is running once again for 2018, starting on Wednesday July 18th and finishing on Friday July 20th.

This event is targeted at those with a primary focus on biological research and who wish to develop their skills in the use of the language R, gearing towards bioinformatics. Most examples will be given in this context, but researchers outside of this field are also welcome to attend,

This year, each day will be considered as a separate workshop and requires individual registration. The course is specifically designed to be taken as a whole which follows a clear progression through the three days, however you are free to choose days that suit your interests and prior experience. The topics covered across each day will be:

Day 1: Introduction to R & RStudio

  • Importing and working with tabular (i.e. spreadsheet-type) data
  • Data Visualisation using ggplot2
  • Making Professional Plots for Publication
  • RMarkdown

Day 2: Digging Deeper with R

  • Understanding vectors and R data structures
  • Subsetting R objects
  • Basic Statistical Tests and Models
  • Loops and iteration
  • Writing simple functions

Day 3: Genomics Using R

  • Working with annotations
  • Genomic Ranges, Genomic Alignments and TxDb objects
  • Working with sequence-level information
  • Plotting genome-level information using GViz

University of Adelaide postgraduate students can receive CaRST accreditation for 6 hours per day attended.

Catering

Each day will consist of 4x90 minute sessions with breaks for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. In order to keep costs down morning tea and afternoon will be provided, but lunch will not be provided.

Please advise if you have any specific catering requirements such as gluten-free, halal etc

Registration

Please purchase a separate ticket for each day you plan on attending.

University of Adelaide Staff and Students are able to purchase subsidised tickets. Please ensure you register using your University of Adelaide email address when purchasing these tickets.

Attendees from outside of the University of Adelaide are also very welcome.

Computing Requirements

All attendees are expected to use their own laptop computer for this event. Installation instructions for Windows, Mac and Linux will be sent prior to attendance. If you prefer remote access to R running in the cloud, please contact us to ensure we have enough instances running.

A WiFi login will be provided for those without existing access to the University of Adelaide WiFi network.
